I made it through my traditional American Thanksgiving. I ate things I don’t normally eat anymore: mashed potatoes, bread stuffing, carrot cake, Apartame. I originally envisioned sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts, and spiced pecans instead of dessert. But everyone in the family has their vision too, and you just have to admit that you aren’t in control unless you want to be by yourself.
The next day I was still alive and felt OK. NOt great, but not bad. I had enjoyed those carbs! Inevitably, I wanted more so, I went to have some Pho. OH how I have missed Pho! I even told the Pho bowl as much while I ate. The white rice noodles are the problem. I know I could order it without…and maybe I will find the strength to do that, but so far I have just avoided setting foot in the restaurant. People, I am an honorary Vietnamese. One of my very best friends and my boyfriend are Vietnamese. I could eat this food every day. For the uninitiated, I will explain briefly. Pho, the big bowl of perfectly seasoned broth, with beef and noodles is an ideal comfort food. It comes with a plate of bean sprouts, basil sprigs, raw jalapeno slices and a wedge of lime. You can add finely ground black pepper, sriracha hot sauce, and hoisin, if you like. So it is customizeable. You can get it with different cuts of meat; everything from tripe and tendon to thin slices of eye of round. I like to add enough black pepper and hot souce so that it clears my head and makes me warm all over.
Its funny how I have seasons of strictness and laxness with my diet. On my birthday, for instance, I ate the guacamole without chips and skipped the margarita. Now, I am in a more relaxed phase. For example, Nourishing Traditions does not espouse protien powders of any sort, but I broke down and bought one called metameal. I got the rice protien version so I could avoid the soy. It has been a real help to have something like that.
By the way, my computer was down for a while and I couldn’t log in to my blog. I finally tracked down the password, but I am wondering if there is anyone at the helm of this magazine these days. I got no response from them. Also, I seem to be th only wone blogging. And there haven’t been new magazine articles in almost a year. Hmmmmm….. Finally, when I did log in after over a months absence, I had 6 comments: all of them spam. Dissapointing. At least the discussion is alive and well.

Audrey we’re reading you, loud & clear. I’ve enjoyed following your learning curve.
Not everyone who reads comments, but we’ve each got our own story.
Pho sounds interesting; I haven’t had it. Now if I see it on a menu, I’ll know it’s good.
Best wishes.

Thanks for posting Audrey.
Can I ask what the motivation was for the protein powder?

Yes. About that protien powder…… A friend of mine in one of my energy classes recommended it. I was in her medical office, so I muscle tested (kinesiology) to see if my body wanted it. It did. There must have been enough good about it to compensate for the fact that it is a protien powder. (I am aware of what SF has to say about protien powders.) This one was specifically for blood sugar regulation. I was tempted by the convenience. I work on my feet, sometimes with little or no break to refuel. It was really good for those times when I woke in the middle of the night due to crashing blood sugar. I ran out of it and haven’t replaced it yet as my friend’s office is an hour away.
